Module summary

This second, linked course on Clinical Practice and Outreach run throughout the extended 40-week year as dental students gain increasing experience of working in a variety of clinical environments. It builds on previous experience of examination and diagnosis, leading to the instigation of preventive and treatment options. Clinical skills of local anaesthesia are further developed and simple restorations will be performed for adult patients.The occlusion in function will be studied at a basic level and opportunity will be provided for participation in a clinical exercise to help explainits relevance. Greater experience of working with members of the dental team is provided with an emphasis on establishing effective working practices in terms of both chairside assistance and infection control procedures.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate safe clinical working practices;
- communicate with patients in relation to their oral and dental disease;
- carry out tests to aid diagnosis;
- diagnose caries and periodontal disease, using clinical and radiographic information;
- provide pain control for simple restorative procedures;
- place simple restorations in adult patients;
- demonstrate an awareness of the occlusion in function and movements of the mandible;
- work more effectively with a dental nurse and other members of the dental team;
- provide dietary advice in relation to oral health issues;
- demonstrate further practice of skills in basic life support;
- demonstrate an awareness of the limitations of their experience;
- demonstrate progression of core skills in patient communication, education and advice.
