Module summary

Learn to speak Cantonese! This module is designed for native Chinese speakers who want to learn how to communicate in oral Cantonese. It covers the pronunciation, tones, grammatical structure and vocabulary of Cantonese. Classes include conversation, role-play, and learning from audiotapes. You will be able to conduct conversations in Cantonese at the end of the course. For further details see Department of East Asian Studies website

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be:

- familiar with the Cantonese pronunciation and tones
- able to understand everyday language in Cantonese
- aware of the fundamental differences between Cantonese and Mandarin syntax and vocabulary
- able to conduct a conversation in Cantonese on a range of situational topics for everyday life.

Syllabus

This module is designed for native Chinese speakers who want to learn how to communicate in oral Cantonese. It covers pronunciation, tones, vocabulary and grammatical structures. Role-play, audio / visual tapes and conversations are used to develop oral and aural skills in functional language for everyday situations.
