Module summary

This module introduces student to contemporary Chinese politics and contemporary Chinese political history. It will look at the structure of the Chinese government and its relations with neighbouring territories, as well as major issues of China's policy making, especially since 1979.

Objectives

Students should acquire factual knowledge of:
- the politics and contemporary history of China;
- the structure of the Chinese government and its relations with neighbouring territories;
- and major issues of China's policy making, especially since 1979.

Students will learn to locate, collate and analyse data on China and will develop writing and presentation skills.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- understand politics of contemporary China;
- locate, collate and analyse material on contemporary Chinese politics;
- form sound academic judgements on Chinese politics and on major approaches to contemporary Chinese politics and contemporary Chinese political history;
- summarise, contextualise and critically assess specific empirical data relating to Chinese politics.


Syllabus

- Politics, government and modern history; the formation of the socialist state; the power structure and decision making.
- Major ideological and political issues in the reform period of Deng Xiaoping and beyond.
- China's political and economic integration with the world.
- Issues of social policy, local governance, and civil society.
- Social stratification, classes and status groups in Chinese society and politics.
