Module summary
This module covers the topologies and circuit analysis of basic switched-mode power electronic converters, with design and applications examples. It also provides familiarity with the structures and operating characteristics of the main types of semiconductor devices that are used.Objectives
To learn the basics of three-phase circuits, connections, voltage and current analysis and real and reactive power calculations.To learn the fundamentals of electricity conversion from the form supplied by the source to the forms required by the load.
To understand power electronic conversion techniques, including the basic converters (DC-DC, AC-DC and DC-AC) and their power switching and control methods.
To learn the methods of circuit analysis applicable to switched mode circuits.
To gain familiarity with the essential properties of the relevant semiconductor devices.
To be able to design simple converters for practical applications.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should:
-understand the three-phase circuit, voltage and current relationships, power calculation in three phase circuits and be able to analyse the balanced three-phase systems;
- understand the principles of power control by switching, the control methods (PWM and phase angle control) and be familiar with commonly used semiconductor switching devices;
- be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the basic DC-DC, DC-AC and AC-DC converters;
- have gained the skills to perform analyses and design of power converters for practical applications;
-have gained a basic understanding of three-phase circuit, phasors and analysis, calculations of voltage, current, power and power factor.
Syllabus
- Principles of power conversion and control using semiconductor power switches.
- Practical power converter application examples.
- DC-DC buck and boost converters with PWM control, input to output V/I relationships and filter design.
- AC circuit analysis; instantaneous and complex power
- Balanced three-phase circuits.
- Power calculations in balanced three-phase circuits.
- Single phase and three-phase thyristor-controlled line-commutated rectifiers; current and voltage waveforms and analysis; calculation of output filter capacitor.
- Practical power converter design considerations and calculations.
- Definition and evaluation of power factor for a power converter connected to an AC power system.
Lab classes include DC-DC Chopper converter implementation with PWM control.
