Module summary

This module is for students who already have a good grade at A-level (A2) and wish to take their French to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a high level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing in both formal and informal registers.The module includes a portfolio of independent work and a mini-research project which provides the opportunity to research an area related to your studies through the medium of French. Communication skills which will be developed include debating skills, discussion, role play, interview techniques, presentation skills and writing a report.

Objectives

On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- extract accurately information from a wide range of materials
- develop skills and competence beyond A2/CEFR B2
- maintain a lengthy conversation in French on a range of topics
- show spontaneity in expressing and defending their ideas in French
- research, analyse and present a prepared aspect of their field of study in French
- use appropriate idioms and expressions in French; scan and skim French texts relating to their field of study
- understand points of view and implicit meanings
- write freely for a variety of purposes in French, adapting style and register appropriately.

Learning outcomes
On completing this module students would be expected to have achieved a level which is post A-level +1.

They should have increased their vocabulary and knowledge of idioms in the topics covered; increased their general knowledge and understanding of these areas especially in the context of modern French culture and institutions; and increased their knowledge of, and ability to use, grammar accurately.


Syllabus

Main topics covered:
- the Arts today in France including cinema, architecture, public art and music;
- society - family, languages and immigration

The content is deliberately general to appeal to students from a variety of academic backgrounds. Students will be able to specialise when preparing their portfolio.
