Module summary
This module is one strand of GEOG1310 People Place and Politics, a 2nd semester core 40 credit module in BA Geography. It is comprised of 10 weekly lectures and seminars on transitions in UK cities and cities globally. Students are also able to attend a selection of seminars and practicals of the larger GEOG1310 module to help widen their knowledge and skills. It is assessed by an exam.Objectives
- To develop students' human geography knowledge and skills within the core area of urban geography- To explore key contemporary urban change issues through a mix of learning and teaching activities and in different global contexts
- To further develop transferable skills
- To encourage students to develop as independent learners through structured activities
Learning outcomes
- an understanding of the different spaces occupied in cities by different social and ethnic groups
- an understanding of potential scenarios for future, sustainable cities
- an understanding of debates surrounding ideal or model cities
- an understanding of the changing welfare state and implications for service provision
- an understanding of the importance of access and equity in geographies of health and education
- an understanding of the strategies used by modern retailers to gain market share in the UK
Syllabus
This is a 10-week lecture programme and associated seminars for UL 1 and practicals for UL2 linked to key topics.
Indicative topics to be explored: Changing cities and urban economies; urban regeneration; representing cities; urban politics & conflict; experiencing cities

Private study
Students will be given directed independent study, both individual and group work. Tasks will be specific and also supported by VLE materials.The aim of this is to inculcate a culture of independent working while supporting students while they are learning to learn. Online learning will include some specific online tasks plus review of course materials.
Private study will mainly be in preparation for assessments, and general review of module materials eg guided reading, preparation for presentations, etc.
