Pre-requisite qualifications

Satisfactory completion of two years of any current Geography degree programme (minimum 100 credits passed each year) with an expected minimum level 2 average of high 2ii.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

The objective of this module is to provide the student with a valuable period of working with a potential employer in a recognised work placement.

The placement should enhance their transferable skills and work experience which, for a substantial period of time, may be included in their CVs and will improve their future employability. The placement will be monitored by a supervisor to ensure that it is a rewarding and worthwhile experience for the student.

The actual experience of the work placement may vary widely from one student to another, dependent of the nature of the work undertaken.

Skills outcomes
The essential individual nature of the industrial placement means that each student may have different learning experiences. Students on this module may benefit from gaining any or all of the following:

A2 The diversity of global environments and the operation of, and inter-relationships between physical and biological systems over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales

C4 Collect, interpret and synthesise different types of quantitative and qualitative geographical data

Syllabus

The placement will last for a minimum of nine months and a maximum of 15 months and will be recognised and authorised as a worthwhile placement by staff of the School of Geography. Prior to the placement an individual placement plan will be drawn up by the student and accepted and authorised by the Industrial Placement Tutor.

The student will be expected to work in a professional and responsible manner within the host organisation, and to complete the required academic work to a satisfactory standard, including an on-going portfolio of skill acquisition.

Private study

- Supervision will be on an individual basis, mainly at the planning stage and for de-briefing at the end.
- There will be some contact and monitoring throughout the placement on an ad hoc basis.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be monitored through contact with the student throughout placement, and through a placement visit taking place several months after the commencement of the placement (wherever practicable).
