Pre-requisite qualifications
A minimum of two years of a medical degree, preferably three.This module is not approved as a discovery module
Objectives
On completion of this module, students will:- have discussed in detail the concepts of health, illness and disease
- have explored the concept of health beliefs
- be familiar with the concept of the sick role and illness behaviour
- have explored the role of culture and the family in health and illness
- have explored the relationship between occupation, social class and health
- have explored the role of the doctor and the doctor-patient relationship.
Learning outcomes
- On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the different factors which may influence health beliefs.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of illness behaviour.
- Describe alternative and complementary therapies and compare them critically with each other and conventional biomedicine.
- Discuss the relationship between occupation, social class and health.
- Consider the effect of illness on an individual, their family and their community.
- Show an awareness of the changing nature of the doctor-patient relationship over time.

Syllabus
This module will look at the different influences on patients' health beliefs and behaviours. It will look at patients' and doctors' perceptions of ill health and factors which may determine whether help is sought.
The role of the family, education, cultural background, ethnicity and social class will be explored.
Students will compare conventional biomedicine with alternative therapies.
