Objectives

This 10 credit module aims to familiarise students with essential aspects of conducting research and evaluation. This includes an introduction to a range of applied health research and evaluation methods which are relevant to the types of projects they will undertake as part of their intercalated BSc.

Tomorrow's Doctors emphasizes the need for students to develop knowledge and skills across a number of domains that are related to both research and maintaining good medical practice, eg understanding and applying research evidence, critical analysis of data.

This module will introduce students to a range of such transferable skills relevant to both research and service evaluation.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to describe and discuss:
- the rationales underpinning different types of research approaches and designs;
- the potential strengths, limitations and applications of a range of research studies;
- key ethical and regulatory issues in the conduct of research.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- identify and develop research and evaluation questions which are relevant to clinical practice and organisation.
- understand a range of study designs, data collection and analysis methods
- apply core knowledge and skills in research and evaluation design and conduct in order to guide the planning and execution of a project.


Syllabus

This module will introduce students to the research methods and skills which are required to plan and undertake a successful research project. Topics covered will include:
Formulating a research question
Engaging stakeholders in research
Choosing a research design
Identifying and addressing ethical issues
Choosing and using quantitative research methods
Collecting and analysing qualitative research data
