Objectives

i) to demonstrate a critical understanding of educational theory
ii) to formulate learning objectives which are appropriate to the learners' situation
iii) to select and use appropriate methods to achieve these learning objectives
iv) to design, implement and evaluate a curriculum appropriate to the learner and area of study
v) to demonstrate expertise in the communication skills required for teaching

Syllabus

Paradigms: What is education for? Different views of knowledge, education, curriculum. Social nature of learning. Learning styles. This will allow the participants to place their own educational philosophy in a broader framework.

How to teach: Theory and practice of effective teaching methods. Role of the teacher. Uses of one-to-one teaching, explaining, questioning and feedback. Relating educational practice to philosophical stance. Skills teaching with video prompted feedback.

Curriculum design: Essential elements of the curriculum document including objectives, methods, assessment, evaluation and their inter-relation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative assessment will be provided by tutors and peers during seminars, in particular during presentations back to the group.

In addition participants will be expected to keep a learning log, which will contain:
- a narrative of their progress through the course
-accounts of other learning and teaching activities over the duration of the course, and evaluations of those activities
-a developing curriculum document for a planned future teaching activity
