Pre-requisite qualifications

Applicants should normally possess a honours degree in a relevant discipline, or a medical degree, and be working in primary care.

Objectives

On completion of this module , students should have gained the knowledge, skills and understanding to:
- conduct an in depth academic exploration of the theoretical basis and practical application of 'the consultation' in primary care;
- develop personal consultation skills.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- critically explore the role of the consultation in primary care, including different models of the consultation;
- apply and critically evaluate these consultation models by observation of a variety of consultations;
- critically evaluate personal consultation skills and develop ways to improve performance in future consultations;
- explore the validity of existing GP consultation models to different primary care contexts.

Skills outcomes
Students will be able to critically apply communication models to observed consultations and develop a personal learning strategy to address learning needs in relation to the consultation.


Syllabus

The module syllabus will include:
- models of the consultation;
- models of analysing the consultation;
- personal and group reflection leading to skills development.
