Pre-requisite qualifications

Applicants should normally possess a honours degree in a relevant discipline, or a medical degree, and be actively involved in teaching in a primary care setting.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- conduct an academic exploration of educational theory as it applies to the teaching of consultation skills;
- develop the skills of those involved in the teaching of the consultation in primary care.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
1. be able to apply the basic concepts of learning and teaching in adult education to teaching of the consultation;
2. be able to critically evaluate different methods of teaching the consultation (observation, role play, simulations, video analysis) and different tools to use for such teaching (ALOBA, problem based analysis etc);
3. have developed their teaching and facilitating skills for teaching the consultation.

Skills outcomes
Students will be able to successfully use teaching theory to critically analyse and develop consultation skills teaching.


Syllabus

The syllabus for this module will include:
- looking at basic concepts of learning and teaching in adult education as applied to the consultation;
- individual and group reflection on teaching to develop teaching skills;
- critical evaluation of the effectiveness of different teaching methods;
- to explore and develop feedback skills with regard to this work.
