Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- reflect on the effectiveness of their practice using a relevant knowledge base
- demonstrate an adherence to professional values and to the provision of ethically sound practice
- describe the range of commonly misused substances in the UK
- understand the effects of drugs and alcohol on individuals
- carry out screening and referral assessment
- assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to service user
- contribute to care planning and review
- generate appropriate referrals for additional support
- help service users address their substance use through an action plan.
Syllabus
This module will give students a working knowledge of drug and alcohol effects and familiarise them with assessment and screening tools used in the field. It will develop the necessary skills to complete a comprehensive assessment and plan treatment accordingly.
The course will enable students to begin to make sense of what service users need and create opportuties to practice the skills needed to ensure treatment is planned appropriately and comprehensively. Motivational dialogue is also developed in this course to assist on the above and enhance the assessment process.
An integral element of the syllabus is learning about reflective practice in terms of what this is and how it is used. This is covered in two ways; there is a specific teaching session but also it will be re-visited as it is integrated into skills practice.
