Pre-requisite qualifications

The student must be able to demonstrate that he or she has:
- Satisfied the standard entry requirements for the Certificate of Higher Education
- Opportunities for practice with appropriate client groups

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Reflect on the effectiveness of their practice using a relevant knowledge base
- Demonstrate an adherence to professional values and to the provision of ethically sound practice
- Have an understanding of motivation and behaviour change in relation to substance use and misuse.
- Be able to apply motivational micro skills
- Demonstrate an understanding of evidence based interventions and apply theory to practice
- Describe the context for which they are provided

Syllabus

The aim of the module is to develop the necessary skills to engage clients in treatment and familiarise the students with the principles of effective evidence based interventions.

In the main the syllabus will develop skills such as engaging service users in treatment specifically by using motivational dialogue. It will address anti-discriminatory practice and develop an understanding of the psychological and pharmacological therapies used in the substance misuse field.

An integral element of the syllabus is learning about reflective practice in terms of what this is and how it is used. This is covered in two ways; there is a specific teaching session but also it will be re-visitied as it is integrated into skills practice.
