Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- accurately articulate at least one theoretical concept relevant to this module, both in writing and using a presentational form;
- relate this concept to a reflextive understanding of the development of self;
- site the concept within an overal theoretical framework;
- make use of personal authority and engagement to critique the theory;
- consider the theoretical concept from the vantage point of at least one other theoretical framework

Syllabus

This module will introduce students to a range of perspectives on personality development from early through to contemporary psychoanalytical theories. These will include developmental theories relating to the baby and young child with reference to implications for ongoing development across the life cycle. Specific reference will be made to the work of Freud, Jung, Klein, Winnicott, Fairbairn, Guntrip and Bowlby. In addition, concepts drawn from cognitive, behavioural and cognitive analytic theory will be considered. The nature of identity as a social construction will also be explored. Students will deepen their understanding of these concepts through guided reading and experiential exercises.
