Objectives

This module is the first field specific module studied at level 3. The module is designed to increase the students’ knowledge and understanding of conditions that lead to a child becoming acutely ill and the evidence based assessment and management that is required. The structure of the module follows the same systematic approach that is required to assess a child who is acutely ill drawing on knowledge and understanding of both normal and abnormal physiology. Throughout the module students will critically appraise the evidence base underpinning the care delivered to acutely ill children and will evaluate the care they have witnessed delivered in practice. Students will evaluate the needs of the family when a child is acutely ill and reflect on their role in meeting these needs. As children are treated in a variety of settings the module utilises a principles based approach so that knowledge can be applied to any healthcare setting. The use of blended learning enables students to learn in a variety of ways and put this knowledge into practice in the scenario based sessions.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will:
- Demonstrate understanding of relevant normal and altered physiology and its application to the nursing care of the acutely ill child.
- Reflect critically upon the skills required in assessing and prioritising the needs of the acutely ill child.
- Evaluate the rationale for implementing specific forms of monitoring, show comprehension of the information received and recognise the therapeutic interventions needed to promote hemodynamic stability.
- Evaluate the needs of the family and reflect upon their role and that of the multidisciplinary team in relation to meeting these needs.
- Critically analyse the management of clinical emergencies that occur when children are acutely ill.

Syllabus

This module follows a systematic approach to assessment of the acutely ill child.
Recognition of the sick child and early warning scores
Airway assessment and management of common conditions e.g. foreign body airway obstruction, child with tracheotomy
Respiratory assessment and management of common respiratory conditions e.g. asthma, bronchiolitis, pneumonia.
Assessment and management of the shocked child.
Neurological assessment and management of common neurological conditions e.g. meningitis, brain tumours, head injury and a child with a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt.
Assessment and management of a child with a traumatic injury e.g. c-spine immobilisation, log rolling
Management of cardio-pulmonary arrest in neonates, infants and children.
Psycho-social needs of the child and family
Pharmacology applied to the care of the acutely ill child.

Private study

Articulate presentations used to give information prior to practical sessions or enhance concepts discussed in other sessions. These are interactive and test student’s knowledge as they work through them.
Wimba Create online workbooks based on normal and abnormal physiology e.g. respiratory system and neurological system. These are interactive and test student’s knowledge as they work through them.
Group work to develop student led presentations that will enable a variety of conditions to be considered and discussed with the whole group.
Directed reading in journals, books and websites to enhance understanding of the practical sessions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are monitored throughout the module by a variety of methods.
- Access to the VLE and engagement with resources can be monitored through ‘gradebook’ and students who are not engaging can be identified and offered additional support.
- Students submit a formative assessment part way through the module. This encourages early consideration of the assignment.
- Scenario sessions allow the module team to work with the students in smaller groups and can highlight any gaps in knowledge and understanding that individual students may have or that are issues for the whole group.
