Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- evaluate theories of motivation and motivational change
- evaluate theories of behaviour and behaviour change and relate to clinical practice
- discuss the extent to which motivational interventions, and specific skills and strategies used in motivational interventions, are appropriate for a range of clients and misused substances
- apply motivational microskills and strategies
- apply strategies to deal with client resistance
- discuss the extent to which manual based protocols of treatment can be utilised in practice
- discuss ways in which motivational interventions can be evaluated and inform client, therapist, and service needs.

Syllabus

The syllabus introduces students to theories of behaviour change and motivation. A critical approach to relevant theories of motivation, behaviour and behaviour change will be expected. The principles and theories of motivational interviewing will be discussed.

Skills for assessing motivation and readiness to change will be developed along with the strategies and microskills of motivational enhancement therapy. Integration of the motivational approach in addiction treatment, and application to a variety of treatment goals and evaluation methods will be explored.

Opportunities for the rehearsal and deliver of these skills will be available, and feedback provided to develop competent practice.

Private study

2 hours reading per lecture hour: 28 hours;
1 hour reading per skill session: 13 hours;
4 hours reading and preparation for each 2 day placement block: 32 hours;
observation and reflection of own video-recorded practice: 45 hours;
preparation for written summative assignments: 90 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative assessment with Practice Mentor on the achievement of guided tasks and competencies.

Formative assessment with Practice Tutor: joint viewing of video recorded therapy session (maximum of 3, minimum of 1 separate fifteen minute interaction between student and client).

Tutorials with Practice Tutor (one hour per student per module).
