Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Critically analyse counselling theory from humanistic/existential traditions.
- Understand the experience of phenomenology in the therapeutic frame.
- Critically analyse counselling theory from psychodynamic traditions.
- Illustrate the experience of using phenomena in the counselling relationship and enabling insight into meanings in the therapeutic frame.
- Reflect on the use of learned theoretical awareness in their own clinical practice.
- Reflect on the use of approaches to brief therapy in their own practice.
- Synthesise an integration of theory, practice and self-drawn from the above.

Syllabus

Students will study the theoretical perspectives of Year 1 in greater depth, deepening their understanding and familiarity with key texts. Students will continue evolving an integration of 'self-in-process' with professional practice and be expected to critically reflect upon the application of theories to their own personal material as well as that of their clients. Recent published material will be considered alongside of emerging practice experience.

Specific areas of study will include:

- Furthering the development of the therapeutic relationship and the application of theory in clinical practice.
- Petruska Clarkson's (1995; 1998; 'in press') 5 primary relationship modes of psychotherapy and psychological counselling
- DSM IV: exploring notions of psychopathology when working with challenging client material;
- The historical development of Eclecticism and Integration in Counselling and Psychotherapy;
- The Individual Practitioner and the process of defining a personal philosophy and model of practice.

Reflection will be encouraged on the historical emergence and current thinking on eclectic and integrative notions of counselling and psychotherapy.

Recording practice and personal notes; observations, impressions, reactions, and reflections - 31 hours.

After 20 weeks, Essay outlining the nature of Integrative Counselling in relation to the student's own developing integration of theory and practice (4000 words).
