Pre-requisite qualifications

Certificated evidence of ability to study at level 3. Normally two years work experience working in the addiction field or child protection fields. Written management support and confirmation of the opportunity to practise in the field throughout the duration of the module.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- critically evaluate the implications of substance misuse for parenting capacity;
- assess and analyse the legal implications for substance using parents;
- demonstrate knowledge of the relevant areas to assess with parents when exploring the implications of their substance misuse upon their parenting capacity;
- analyse the effects of drug and alcohol upon the foetus, the pregnancy, the neonate, and the child and the mother;
- demonstrate competence in assessing risk to the offsprign of substance using parents;
- demonstrate knowledge of substance misuse from a child's perspective;
- critically evalulate evidence based interventions;
- critically reflect on practice, describe learning that has occurred and learning needs that have been identified.

Syllabus

The aim of this module is to enable participants to identify the impact of substance and alcohol use upon parenting capacity and child development. They will explore the legal and child protection ramifications of substance misuse, develop the requisite knowledge to undertake assessments of substance misusing parents and demonstrate knowledge of interventions that support behaviour change.

Participants will be able to explore the experience and implications of being parented by a substance and or alcohol using parent from the child's perspective. They will be informed of the effects of substance and alcohol use upon the foetus and the mother during pregnancy.

Private study

- 2 hours per lecture,
