Module summary

The module is divided into two key components. The first is based within the University and is focused upon developing an understanding of the healthcare provision in another country. Students will explore how different cultures impact on the healthcare professional role.The second component is undertaken in another country and will give students the opportunity to experience the healthcare environment outside the UK. This is intended to enhance awareness of other cultures and explore the economic, social and political influences impacting on the healthcare systems of other countries. Arrangements for international placement: Students are expected to contact the international host organisation and liaise with the module leader by the end of Semester 1 (prior to starting the module in Semester 2).Summative assessment: Essay (2500 words) based on a critical analysis of the healthcare system and roles of health professionals in the country students have visited

Objectives

Students can discuss:
- Healthcare systems in countries outside the UK including economic factors and social and political influences
- Obligations and expectations of undertaking an observational role in another healthcare system
- Factors linked to the international migration of healthcare professionals
- Aspects of professional development through reflection, critical analysis and self-management

Undertake a 2 week observational placement in an healthcare environment within a country outside the UK

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- analyse the value of sharing and exchanging multi-cultural knowledge and experience;
- debate learning experiences with colleagues;
- gain understanding of and empathy for being a 'stranger' within another country;
- undertake an analysis of healthcare provision within another country;
- analyse how different cultures impact on the healthcare professional's role.


Syllabus

Students will have one week preparation, two weeks on exchange in another country and one week reflection on their experiences.
Cultural awareness of other countries - healthcare, economical, politics and the political influences on healthcare. Attitudes and values with regard to nursing within own country and country visited.; nursing role within another country, stranger role; concepts of care and health; evaluation of healthcare.
Reflection; self management, personal and professional development.
