Module summary
This is a practice based module taught face to face. The module is aimed at practitioners who work primarily in substance misuse services or mental health services. It is designed to enable practitioners competently to assess the severity of a service user's problems and, if necessary, refer to another agency (notably for people with severe and enduring mental illness). Practitioners are expected to demonstrate that they can use relevant skills across a range of substance misuse and mental illness disorders including those people who have personality disorders or a moderate severity mood disorder. Students will be required to show that they are familiar with the research literature and that they can apply this to clinical practice and to measure treatment outcomes.Objectives
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:- Discuss and evaluate treatment models of substance misuse co-morbidity.
- Understand and discuss how mental illness and substance misuse interrelate.
- Describe how drugs of misuse are classified.
- Critically evaluate the research literature on the effectiveness of treatments for 'dual diagnosis' service users.
- Undertake a general assessment of a person with a substance misuse and mental illness problem.
- Detect mental illness and make appropriate referral on.
- Complete a risk assessment including mental illness and substance misuse.
- Be able to explain to service users and professionals the interplay of factors which contribute to the risk of drug-related death.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of therapeutic skills in complex cases where service users present with mental illness and substance misuse problems, including the following:
* motivational interviewing
* social behaviour and network therapy
* cognitive behaviour therapy
