Objectives

1. Analyse and critically reflect on themes and developments in social policy in relation to social care and adults
2. To critically assess how provision for adults in the UK is influenced by social, economic and political factors and make international comparisons.
3. To critically reflect on the social work task, skills and intervention within statutory and non- statutory provision for adults across a range of service user groups.
4. Analyse and critically reflect on the changing nature of social care organisations for adults
5. To analyse the professional role of social workers in adapting to, managing and contributing to that process of change
6. To apply rights, diversity values and ethics to social care practice
7. To reflect on the provision of adult social care in the UK in comparison to other countries

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will;
1. Critically evaluate key historical, legal and social changes in social work with Adults
2. Identifying major life course issues affecting adulthood with a focus on transitions, strengths and issues of development
3. Be able to analyse the impact of the social model of disability on practice
4. Critically reflect on the process of social exclusion, inequality and diversity
5. Be able to apply the relevant adult social care legislation to the adult social care sector
6. Be able to analyse the multi- agency nature of the provision of care in adult social care, and relevant issues of quality of care
7. Be critically aware of key Adult Safeguarding policy and procedures, guided by Serious Care reviews
8. Be able to critically evaluate the role of the professional social worker in adult social care, and the skill set required to balance empowerment, choice and rights of the service user and carer with care and protection and the issues of conflicts of interest.
9. Be able to apply the key skills required when undertaking assessments and working in partnership with service users and carers
10. Analyse the provision of adult social care within an international context

- Social Work assessment and practice in:
I. learning disability services
II. Mental Health and
III. Older people's services
- hospital discharge planning
- Hospital medicines management in care homes
- Dementia care support
- National Inquiries and Practice in relation to Adults At Risk
- Person centred practice and assessment
- Discussion of research in relation to older people across Europe

Private study

Independent learning activities will incorporate case study and theoretical materials.
Private study time will be undertaken in relation to self-directed reading / activities set after each lecture to develop, incorporate and critically review their own learning in order to seek to maximise progress. Students will also be expected to read and to prepare for lectures and group activities within this allocated time. They will also be expected to search out relevant material for your use in both of their assignments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

During the module students will be required to undertake group work and complete formative tasks. This will help develop their learning and prepare them for the summative assessment.
