Module summary

This module provides an opportunity for students to discuss the theories and practices of management in health and social care contexts. During the module, group work fosters collaboration, while providing support to analyse one’s own developing role as manager.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

-Critically appraise, research and resolve current management challenges in health and social care

-Critically examine your role and actions in managing people, budgets, and performance to achieve service quality and effectiveness

-Critically discuss the collaboration of managers, service users and carers in the design, delivery and evaluation of person-centred health and social care

-Critically evaluate the impact of policy and research evidence in the structure, management and regulation of health and social care equally for all

Syllabus

To deliver care effectively, and to be able to influence strategy, practice, and policy, one must be able to access a tool-kit of management skills and knowledge. In the context of today's health and social services, these will guide managers to be able to be proactive in their influence on business and policy decisions which directly affect their work. Soft management roles such as case management or people management are often accepted as a part of the job: other skills such as budget management and business planning are taxing yet equally vital to the effective and equitable delivery of care.

Private study

These hours should be used to read textbooks and journal articles relevant to the module. They also include time for course work and assignment preparation and networking with other students on the module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

During the module students will be required to undertake individual and group course work. This will help develop learning and prepare for the summative assessment. This will be a combination of textbook and journal work, group work and online activity in the VLE at University of Leeds. Feedback on this will be given individually and in groups as applicable to the learning activity.
