Module summary
This module provides the student with the opportunity to develop an understanding of one of our European partners and the different socio-cultural, economic and political issues which affect the health of that population along with the development of the health system and to compare this to the UK. Students undertake a two week observational placement in healthcare provision linked with the host institution.Objectives
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:- To critically analyse the value of sharing and exchanging multi-cultural knowledge and experience
- Analyse and debate learning experiences with colleagues
- To demonstrate a critical understanding of and empathy for being a 'stranger' within another country
- Undertake a a critical analysis of healthcare provision within a European Country
- To analyse how different nursing cultures define the nurse's role and how these influence care
Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture
- Demonstrate understanding of European and professional cultural issues that will promote and enhance healthcare by individuals practising in a range of settings.
- Recognise the international dimension of professional nursing knowledge and healthcare and how this influences care in the UK
- Demonstrate critical awareness, understanding and acceptance of cultural differences.
- Demonstrate critical awareness of and respect for clients' individual cultures
- Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the influence of historical, philosophical, ethical, economic, political and professional factors on their own and others' professional culture.

Syllabus
Cultural awareness of European countries - healthcare, economical, political, social, political influences; European culture in its unity and
diversity; attitudes, values with regard to nursing within own country and European countries; role within another country - 'stranger';
observation of nurse's role - concepts of caring, nursing diagnosis, theory models; critical analysis - evaluation of health care; professional
development - reflection; self management.
The intention is that students spend two weeks abroad undertaking an observational placement during this module.

- Preparing for the exchange, flights, accommodation, visa, immunisations, insurance etc- Survival language
- Looking at the Country's information and researching about their healthcare system
- Finding out about the country’s location, industry, population etc.
- Preparing materials with regard to University of Leeds and UK healthcare provision to share with the host
- Reflective diary
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Reflective sessions - each student is expected to participate in the reflective sessions, as they organise their thoughts about their experiences and begin to critically analyses these in relation to relevant literature. This will also widen the students opportunity to learn about other cultures and healthcare systems from fellow studentsMethods of assessment

Producing a poster will enable students to identify key themes in relation to the set criteria (Explore the nature of healthcare provision and the socio-cultural context of this and compare and contrast the healthcare provision with the British system) which they can then expand on in defence of their poster. The abstract will enable them to put the poster in context. There will be compensation between elements.
