Objectives

On completion of the module students will be able to:
- Critically examine the role of the practitioner in safeguarding children and young people, and the practitioner's contribution within multi-agency and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Reflect upon and evaluate their own and society's attitudes and values relating to safeguarding children
- Identify and critically discuss ethical dilemmas presented within child protection, and analyse and synthesise how these impact on decisions taken

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- Critically analyse how historical, ethnic, cultural and political issues impact on the welfare of children and their exposure to abuse
- Evaluate theories and established concepts of child abuse and discuss how these may affect prevention, diagnosis, care and outcome
- Critically discuss how policies and legal guidelines influence child protection and strategies for safeguarding children
- Critically analyse and synthesise Serious Case Reviews in order to identify the inherent potential for system failures and the nature and management of risk.
- Critically analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of clinical governance and/ or supervision as a means of safeguarding children

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored in terms of their involvement within the group and there will be an opportunity to discuss their plan for the essay within the larger group and individual tutorials are available as necessary. Modified lectures will be utilised to deliver the majority of the content in which the students will be actively encouraged to question, brainstorm and discuss points raised in relation to their own experiences and practice. These discussions will be further developed via the tutorial and the responses given will be used to gauge student progress and understanding.
