Module summary

This module provides an opportunity for students to discuss the development of theories about positional and action leadership, while examining their own roles and the two-way impact upon others and their organisation. Wider issues of power, quality and risk are considered in their local, national and international leadership contexts.

Objectives

- critically discuss the development of theories about leadership and strategic management;
- demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the concept of power and its application;
- critically analyse implications and responses to professional issues relevant to leadership, locally, nationally and internationally;
- critically evaluate the effect of leadership styles on the quality of health and social care;
- critically discuss leadership and management of risk.

Syllabus

Explore issues related to a definition and understanding of leadership, the theoretical approaches to leadership and elements, skills and components of leadership; engage in a visioning process for the future development of the organisation for which he/she works; this will lead on to developments in the corporate philosophy and forward agenda; the ethico-legal issues associated with leadership in healthcare will be addressed and the relevant litigation and legislation explored, identifying the responsibilities of the leader in contemporary situations.

Private study

- combination of textbook and journal review, group and online activity in the VLE at University of Leeds
- discussing leadership styles with colleagues
- review of policies and strategies for health and social care to identify leadership styles and theories
- these hours also include time for assignment preparation and networking with other students on the module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

During the module students will be required to participate in a range of activities to help develop their learning and prepare for the summative assessment. This will be a combination of textbook and journal review, group and online activity in the VLE at University of Leeds. Feedback on this learning development will be given individually and in groups as applicable to the learning activity.
