Module summary
- Do you have an 'A' level in Italian (or equivalent)? - Do you want to improve your confidence in reading in the language and to expand your knowledge of Italian culture through the reading of some key works of twentieth-century fiction? This module is intended to provide an introduction to reading Italian literature for Level 1 advanced students. Taking up some of the themes explored in the semester 1 module, ITAL1040 'Italy from Fascism to the Present', this module will give you the chance to read and to study in some depth two important twentieth-century novels: Natalia Ginzburg's Lessico famigliare and Giorgio Bassani's Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini. Both these texts are set during the Fascist period, and they share key themes and concerns. Both combine autobiography and fiction, both focus on the fortunes of a particular family, and both examine in particular the racial persecution of the period. The module will allow you to gain confidence in reading and understanding texts in Italian, as well as introducing you to the skills needed for analysing literary texts. As such, it aims to provide key transferable skills, which can also be applied to reading in other foreign languages (or even in English) and/or to reading other texts - both literary and otherwise - in Italian. This module is only open to those students who have an 'A' level in Italian, or who can show equivalent knowledge. Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate an informed understanding and a critical and linguistic appreciation of selected literary texts.Syllabus
This module will introduce students to the understanding and critical appreciation of a selection of Italian literary texts suitable for first-year post-beginner students.
The module will include a close study of the texts with the aim of encouraging students to develop the skills of reading comprehension and linguistic analysis.
