Objectives

This module aims to introduce students to the skills needed to read full-length written texts in Italian. Through the guided reading of a contemporary novel (Carlo Lucarelli's Carta bianca; 1990), students gain confidence in their ability to read, while also improving their grammatical skills and their techniques of literary analysis.

The novel explores the theme of Italy under Fascism, taking up themes covered in the module ITAL1040 (Italy from Fascism to the Present) in semester 1, and introduces students to the detective genre.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
- read a complex text in Italian (at least for the essential meaning) and answer questions on it;
- make intelligent use of a bilingual dictionary to help them in their reading;
- demonstrate knowledge of the historical background to Carta bianca (the Republic of Salò and the end of WWII);
- demonstrate techniques of literary analysis and knowledge of the detective genre
- apply the reading techniques learned to a wide variety of other texts.

Syllabus

The novel will be read alongside a specially written handbook (prepared by Claire Honess) which contains a summary of each chapter, notes/vocabulary, reading comprehension questions and notes on relevant grammatical constructions and techniques for reading. Students read the novel at the rate of one chapter per week and work through the handbook. Literary and historical themes are explored in an introductory lecture and thereafter as they arise from a close reading of the text.

Private study

The novel to be studied contains 10 chapters. Students will read one chapter per week between week 2 and week 11 of semester 2. They will read each chapter at least twice (and possibly more) and will work through a series of exercises in the handbook, including reading comprehension exercises, grammar exercises, exercises on the use of dictionaries, vocabulary-building exercises and so on.

Preparation for the examination = 9 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The teacher(s) will keep a close eye on classroom participation on the part of the students. Exercises from the handbook will be set as homework on a weekly basis, as outlined above, and will be discussed in detail in class.

The examination will consist of an unseen Reading Comprehension exercise (50% of the marks) plus an essay on the novel (50% of the marks).
