Module summary

The purpose of the module is to enable students to understand harm reduction policy and effective practice and to demonstrate competence in the delivery of harm reduction interventions.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to ensure an in depth understanding of the ways in which substance misuse puts the individual, the immediate social circle and the community at risk of potential danger and actual harm, and to develop competent practice in effective interventions to minimise these risks and harms as required by various professional roles and government guidelines.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:

- to evaluate the effectiveness of their practice using a relevant knowledge base, including an understanding of legal and policy contexts and appropriate research;

- to demonstrate an explicit adherence to their own professional values and to the provision of ethically sound practice;

- to demonstrate knowledge of patterns and methods of substance use and misuse;

- to describe different approaches to the understanding of etiology and consequences of substanc use and misuse;

- to describe the physiological, psychological and environmental processes contributing to and resulting from substance use;

- to describe the contribution of psychopharmocology to the understanding of substance effects and the treatment of substance misuse;

- to critically evaluate harm reduction methods and techniques for safer use of substances;

- to demonstrate knowledge of models of motivational and behaviour change and the way they inform harm reduction interventions;

- to describe the principles of and practise the assessment process with reference to risk and harm;

- to describe and carry out evidence based evaluation of client outcomes,

Ability to describe and implement harm reduction interventions based on knowledge.


Syllabus

The syllabus introduces students to the theory, practice and evaluation of harm reduction approaches:
- An understanding will be gained on the prevalence and methods of substance misuse and the relevance of psychopharmacology.
- Students will increase their knowledge of basic physiology in general and the cardio-vascular system specifically.
- Skills for assessing client need, identification of public health issues, advice giving, and lifestyle change counselling will be developed to a level of competence for safe autonomous practice.
