Pre-requisite qualifications

Appropriate learning to the value of 120 credits at Level 1 or equivalent prior experiential learning. Prior learning must be in a relevant discipline (e.g. social, behavioural, health or biological sciences).

Objectives

On completion of this module, candidates should be able to:
- Describe theories of motivation and motivational change;
- describe theories of behaviour and behaviour change;
- discuss the application of motivation theory to the assessment of client motivation;
- discuss the application of the principles to the practice of motivational interviewing;
- describe and understand the purpose of motivational microskills;
- be aware of a manual based protocol of treatment;
- describe methods of evaluating client outcomes with relevance to MET;
- be aware of the range of published research material on MET.

Syllabus

The syllabus introduces students to the history of research in addiction behaviour including models of behaviour change and motivation. The principles and theory of motivational interviewing will be explored and techniques for measuring the effectiveness of interventions discussed. Skills for assessing motivation and stage of change will be practised during teaching sessions along with the strategies and microskills of motivational enhancement therapy. The implementation of MET will be related to relevant theory supportive of MET.
