Module summary

This module develops a detailed understanding of the physiological processes underpinning drug and alcohol use and dependence and of pharmacological treatments for drug and alcohol dependence.

Objectives

- to develop an understanding of the physiological processes underpinning drug and alcohol use and apply understanding of this to clinical practice.

- to develop an ability to support and advise clients about pharmacological interventions.

- to develop the ability to use audit and evaluation instruments to monitor and assess the effectiveness of practice.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:

- discuss physiological and pharmacological aspects of substance use and treatment for dependence;

- apply detailed understanding of physiological aspects of substance use to clinical practice;

- critically reveiw the physiological and social criteria for pharmacotherapthy;

- debate the characteristics of pharmacological treatments for withdrawal, abstinence, and substitute prescribing;

- justify methods of monitoring adherence to pharmacological treatments;

- effectively give information about the physiological actions of drugs and pharmacological properties of treatements for drug and alcohol dependence;

- harness network support for withdrawal and the maintenance of abstinence;

- plan and prepare the individual and their network for pharmacological interventions;

- evaluate protocols for the delivery of pharmacological treatment;

- discuss ways in which pharmacological treatments can be evaluated.

Skills outcomes
Knowledge and competence in supporting pharmacotherapy and critical appraisal of outcomes.


Syllabus

This module develops a detailed understanding of the physiological processes underpinning drug and alcohol use and dependence. The following topics will be addressed: the absorption, distribution and metabolism of drugs and alcohol; drug tolerance; drug interactions; physiological effects of prescribed medication. Detailed understanding of pharmacological aspects of treatment for drug and alcohol dependence including; psychological and social criteria for pharmacotherapy; treatments for withdrawal, abstinence, and substitute prescribing. Methods of evaluating pharmacotherapy in the addiction field will be discussed.
