Module summary

This module equips students with the theory, evidence for and practice of motivational interviewing for people with complex addiction problems.

Objectives

The aim of the module is to enable students to develop competence in motivational interviewing practice based on theory and research with complex cases in multiple settings. Students will develop the ability to apply motivational interviewing practice in the context of delivery of treatments for different kinds of substance misuse with and without co-existing problems and as part of other behavioural treatments or protocol based motivational enhancement therapy.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- evaluate theories of motivation and motivational change.
- evaluate theories of behaviour and behaviour change and relate to clinical practice.
- critically discuss the extent to which motivational interventions, and specific skills and strategies used in motivational interventions, are appropriate for a range of clients an substance misuse.
- apply motivational interviewing core skills and strategies to people with complex problems of substance misuse and co-existing conditions.
- apply strategies to deal with client resistance.
- use manual based treatment protocols in combination with core skills and therapeutic practice.
- show critical understanding of methods of evaluating process and outcome in motivational interventions.

Skills outcomes
Ability to deliver motivational enhancement therapy with complex addiction and dual diagnosis cases.


Syllabus

The syllabus introduces students to:
- Theories of behaviour change and motivation.
- The theory of and evidence for motivational interviewing.
- Skills for assessing motivation and readiness to change.
- Strategies and core skills of motivational enhancement therapy.
- Integration of the motivational interviewing style with behavioural treatments.
- Application to a variety of treatment goals and evaluation methods.
- Skill development, rehearsal and recorded practice.
