Module summary
This is a practice based module taught face to face. The module is aimed at practitioners who work primarily in substance misuse services or mental health services. It is designed to enable practitioners competently to assess the severity of a service user's problems and, if necessary, refer to another agency (notably for people with severe and enduring mental illness). Practitioners are expected to demonstrate that they can use relevant skills across a range of substance misuse and mental illness disorders including those people who have personality disorders or a moderate severity mood disorder. Students will be required to show that they are familiar with the research literature and that they can apply this to clinical practice and to measure treatment outcomes. Objectives
- Develop ability to undertake a comprehensive assessment.- Demonstrate the ability to produce a case summary including a formulation.
- Demonstrate the ability to work in a motivational style and in particular to use feedback as part of an intervention.
- Demonstrate an ability to apply social behaviour and network therapy to service users with substance misuse and mental health problems.
- An ability to use worksheets associated with different treatments and an ability to use outcome measures and incorporate these into treatment as appropriate.
- An ability to assess risk of relapse.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
- discuss and evaluate treatment models of substance misuse co-morbidity.
- understand and discuss how mental illness and substance misuse interrelate.

- undertake a general assessment of a person with a substance misuse and mental illness problem.
