Module summary

This module is designed to offer an introduction to French law and legal system to elective students. It is aimed at students who are studying French as part of their degree. It is taught in French, and students will thus also have the opportunity to learn French legal vocabulary and register.

Objectives

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

- Explain and illustrate the history and foundational principles of the French legal system;
- Identify, locate and read the major sources of law in France;
- Describe in outline the French court structure and legal procedures;
- Analyse in some depth a selected area of French law;
- Analyse the role of legal rules and the legal system in some aspect of French political, social or cultural life
- Follow a lecture on French law, in French, having developed appropriate strategies of language learning and comprehension;
- Participate actively in a discussion about French law in French;
- Construct an essay or case commentary according to the distinctive French methodology (le plan juridique).

Learning outcomes
Students will gain an understanding of:
- The French legal and constitutional system
- Aspects of French law, particularly the law of obligations
- The relationship between law and other political or social controversies

Skills outcomes
- Development of French Legal vocabulary and register;
- Ability to identify, read and analyse the sources of French Law;
- Ability to relate law to other aspects of society and culture
- Ability to communicate in French about French law both orally and in writing

Private study

Students are required to do approximately 3 hours of preparation for each seminar, involving working through online audio-visual and written materials in French on the VLE. In addition, there is further textbook reading in English and reading of authentic French sources to be done after seminars, particularly in Semester 1. In Semester 2, students undertake French legal writing exercises which they can correct themselves, and some formative written work to be submitted for feedback.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Throughout the year, progress will be monitored through oral work in seminars and through the preparation and discussion of written work for seminars.
