Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to apply practical skills gained in LING1090 Language: Data and Analysis by investigating a series of project topics in unfamiliar languages, and by presenting a research paper on a chosen topic from linguistics at a student-led research conference.

LING1060 Language Projects aims to develop skills in the following ways:
- by drawing on a wide range of resources available in current linguistic research, including IT (WWW and language corpora), native speaker informants, and library-based information resources;
- by collecting and analysing data from an unfamiliar language;
- by learning to develop research bibliographies;
- by enhancing IT skills, including Powerpoint and Word;
- by enhancing teamwork skills (students complete project sheets in groups during study sessions supervised by the module tutor; students are divided in (sub)committees to organise a research conference);
- by enhancing independent study skills (the fourth language project is for independent research, on a topic chosen by the student);
- by applying the theoretical background gained in MODL1060 and LING1100 to practical problems in data collection and analysis.

Syllabus

This module is designed to complement LING1090 Language: Data and Analysis in Semester 1. During the semester, students apply practical and theoretical skills to investigate a series of four assessed projects, and organise and present at the First Year Linguistics and Phonetics Research Conference.
Students work in groups on a series of three assigned topics on a particular language during the semester (mainly focusing on syntax, morphology, and phonology).

The projects are selected for:
a) accessibility of information resources on that language;
b) specialist expertise in the department;
c) availability of native speaker informants and
d) suitability for linguistic research in particular areas, e.g. morphology, phonology or syntax.

Students complete project sheets in groups during seminars supervised by the module tutor and present their findings in both written and Powerpoint formats during weekly seminars. Topics are investigated using both information-based resources (WWW, libraries, corpora) and fieldwork with native speaker informants. The fourth topic is for individual investigation and allows students to research option topics in more detail while developing research bibliographies.
Students work in pairs to present a research paper on a chosen topic from linguistics at the First Year Linguistics and Phonetics Research Conference. They write a report and develop a Powerpoint or poster presentation.

Private study

- 60 hours spent researching, then writing report and developing Powerpoint presentation for group projects (20 hours per group project);
- 30 hours spent organising the First Year Linguistics and Phonetics Research Conference, and researching, then writing report and developing Powerpoint or poster presentation for the conference;
- 90 hours spent researching and writing individual project 4.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- 3 x 1,000 word Language Project reports, delivered fortnightly by each group during the semester;
- 8-minute Powerpoint presentation or 4-minute poster presentation at the First Year Linguistics and Phonetics Research Conference.
