Objectives

On completion of this module students will have practical experience of doing a piece of research in linguistics. They will have the opportunity to test theoretical principles in the analysis and description of real language phenomena.

Syllabus

Data collection, analysis and description, applied to a linguistic topic of the student's choice. Use of appropriate scholarly material.

Private study

198 hours planning, carrying out and writing up a research project which has been agreed with the supervisor in advance.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Submission of a plan for the dissertation in Week 3 of Semester 2.

Submission of a short excerpt from the dissertation (about 1500 words) before easter for the supervisor to give feedback in terms of content and style.
