Each topic is discussed from both theoretical and methodological perspectives. You will learn advanced phonetic and phonological terminology, read research papers and undertake your own original research.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to provide students with (1) a thorough understanding of selected topics in phonetics and phonology; (2) a command of advanced phonetic and phonological terminology; (3) an ability to read and evaluate original research in the field; (4) practical skills in the instrumental analysis of speech data.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be thoroughly familiar with selected topic areas in phonetics and phonology, and will have gained advanced knowledge of articulatory and acoustic phonetics, and issues of phonological representation. In addition, they will have gained further practical analysis skills, particularly in the area of instrumental phonetics.

Syllabus

The topics to be covered in the module will vary from year to year. They may include, for example, connected speech phenomena, suprasegmental features of speech, disfluency in normal and disordered speech, sociophonetics and phonological change, or issues in the phonetics and phonology of particular languages.
