Module summary

This module is designed to allow complete beginners to develop an understanding of the principles of phonology and script of the Arabic language, enabling them to read simple Arabic texts using audio and visual materials. Students will also acquire the use of simple sentence structures for speaking and writing. This course will allow students to become familiar with some basic aspects of the Arab culture.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
1) Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of phonology and script;
2) Demonstrate a basic use of practical skills in Arabic: reading, writing, speaking and listening;
3) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of some aspects of Arab culture.

Learning outcomes
1) The ability to read and write basic Arabic;
2) A basic knowledge of some grammatical concepts;
3) A basic knowledge of some aspects of the Arab culture.
4) Accumulation of basic Arabic vocabulary

Skills outcomes
Develop the ability to read, write and speak basic Arabic language;
Develop an awareness of basic aspects of the Arab culture.


Syllabus

- The script and sounds of the Arabic alphabet;
- Introduce basic grammatical concepts e.g. feminine and masculine, the definite article and adjective;
- Numbers 1-10
- The structure of simple Arabic sentences;
- Acquiring some usable Arabic vocabulary;
- Introduce some aspects of the Arab culture.

Private study

Time for private study is expected to break down as follows:
Preparation for seminars = 16 hours
