Objectives

On completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. demonstrate an essential use of practical skills in Arabic: reading, writing, speaking and listening
2. demonstrate the ability to understand the main information and translate short articles with the help of a dictionary
3. understand and use aspects of Arabic grammar: gender, subject, adjective, al-idafa
4. demonstrate the ability to communicate in Arabic with native or other competent speakers on familiar topics
5. write short descriptive essays, in addition to a CV
6. demonstrate an awareness of some aspects of the Arab world's culture.

Syllabus

1. Oral practice: discussion in small groups.
2. Aural practice: practical language classes using audio-visual materials.
3. Written practice: training in the writing of short letters and short descriptive essays.
4. Arabic grammar: the dual, roots and patterns, the superlative, preposition with pronounts, object pronouns, and non-human plural.
5. Explore some aspects of the Arabic culture and societies.
