Module summary

This module will build on and consolidate your understanding of the morphology, syntax and grammar of the Modern Standard Arabic, in addition to extending your knowledge and enhancing your confidence in speaking and writing Arabic.

Objectives

The module will introduce students to:
More in-depth understanding of the morphology, grammar and syntax of Modern Standard Arabic, in addition to consolidating and extending their knowledge of the language acquired in previous module LLLC1371.
Students will also develop and refine their understanding of the structure of the language and the culture of the countries where Arabic language is spoken.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a substantial use of practical skills in Arabic: reading, writing, speaking and listening;
2. Have the knowledge and confident use of aspects of Arabic grammar such as, conditional, case marking and verbal forms;
3. Translate basic sentences from and into Arabic; be able to write social letters and paragraphs on familiar topics and correspondence connected to daily life;
4. Obtain factual information and extract main ideas from elementary texts without the use of dictionary;
5. Carry out a limited conversation, express opinion, and report information on a wide range of topics;
6. Demonstrate a good understanding of the main aspects of the Arabic culture.

Skills outcomes
To develop the ability to identify, describe and use a range of linguistic forms and structures in writing and speaking, and also to assimilate information about the Arabic culture.


Syllabus

1. Explore a wide range of everyday topics through reading comprehension.
2. Emphasis on the Interactive communication language learning approach; reading, writing, listening and speaking skills will be developed by means of role-play, pair and group discussion, also by using a range of audio-visual materials. In addition to presentation as well as writing assignments on familiar topics;
3. The study of grammatical structures: (e.g. quantifiers, comparative and superlative, jussive and subjunctive, object and relative pronouns, conditional, roots and patterns, case marking and forms of the verb etc);
4. Discover some of the differences between formal and spoken Arabic;
5. Explore aspects of Arabic culture and society.
