Module summary

Do you work with learners with special education needs? Would you like to know more? This module introduces you to policy and practice (past and present) relating to those with SEN, and questions whether inclusive practice is appropriate or desirable for all learners. Strategies for developing good practice are identified and discussed.

Objectives

The purpose of the module is to provide students with:
-An appreciation of changes in perceptions of physical and learning differences over time
-Understanding of contrasting perspectives on the nature of inclusion
-Understanding of the impact of legislation & policy on SEN provision
-Knowledge of the range of SEN & strategies to enable access to the curriculum

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will have:
1. Knowledge of a variety of perspectives on SEN and inclusion
2. An appreciation of the range of the SEN continuum & associated educational provision
3. An understanding of ways in which their professional practice can become more inclusive

Skills outcomes
Communication skills; approaches to meeting the needs of learner with SEN; confidence (presentations)

-Exploring the concept of inclusion from personal & historical perspectives
-Examining SEN-related legislation & policy & the impact on practice
-What is inclusive provision; can special school be inclusive? Is mainstream provision desirable for all?
-Developing inclusive schools & classrooms: learning from best practice in different contexts

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in each taught session and via the tutorials for the assignments. Access to tutors is also available via email.

Resit arrangements for assessment 1 consist of an alternative time for an individual or group to deliver the presentation. If for any reason this is not possible for an individual, the student will be required to submit a 2,000 word report or presentation outline on a specific SEN & approaches that can be used to meeting the needs of affected learners.
