Module summary

This module will be of interest to anyone who wishes to understand more about serious offending in adolescence. Initially, students will explore key theories and models which may help to understand and explain such behaviour. They will then move on to consider some high profile cases and ask what can be done to reduce the incident of serious offending in adolescence.

Objectives

This module will consider the prevalence of and reasons for physical and sexual offending in young people. It will address some of the key underlying issues in this behaviour and explore some of the theoretical perspectives in this area.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will:
1. Have a critical understanding of the major theoretical explanations for young people committing violent and sexual offences;
2. Understand the history and outcome of some well known cases in this area of study;
3. Have knowledge of the law in relation to serious offending by young people;
4. Have critically examined current policy on serious offending by young people.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. relate theoretical understanding to practical and professional contexts;
2. reflect critically on professional responses to violent and sexual offending in young people;
3. evaluate the impact of media reports on work with violent and sexual offending in young people;
4. demonstrate understanding of the field through written discussion and argument.
