Objectives

The aim of the module is to provide students with an understanding of the fundamental principles of project management and some of the tools and techniques used to plan, control and deliver a successful project

Learning outcomes
Knowledge of:
-Establishing the aims and objectives of a project
-Project planning and design.
-Analytical tools used in project planning and implementation
-Potential risks and constraints, and contingencies to deal with them.
-Defining the success criteria for a specific project.

Skills outcomes
Ability to :
1.To identify and plan a project using a project management planning approach
2. To use basic project management tools and techniques to: develop, schedule, plan resources, and manage a project


Syllabus

Consideration of theory and practice in relation to:
- Definition - what makes up a project
- Project appraisal - is it valid in terms of payback and risk.
- Stakeholder analysis.
- Project lifecycle from conception to post-project evaluation and review.
- Project planning - Work Breakdown Structure, activity charts, Gantt charts, Critical path analysis.
- Risk analysis.
- Project teams - Leadership in project management.
- Organisational structures for projects.
- The importance of clearly defined objectives - The use of the business case.
- Project closure and review.
