Module summary
This module explores contemporary issues in relation to Early Childhood Studies. The module will be relevant to all those thinking of careers working with children under 8 years - including teaching, social work and the therapeutic professions. The theory, practice and policy of issues that affect this group of children will be considered from differing perspectives such as health services, social care, early years services and the voluntary sector.Objectives
This module will examine current policy in relation to children in the early years with specific regard to looked after children, troubled and troublesome children and the law.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to
1. Show critical understanding of current policy initiatives and Government priorities in relation to the Early Years Sector and how they impact on practice
2. Consider and critically analyse how current policy is influenced by global, cultural, historical and economic factors
3. Understand and critically analyse the law with regard to the Early Years Sector and how this impacts on practice
4. Critically analyse Early Years practice and policy in the UK
5. Critically evaluate the range of disciplinary perspectives that inform understanding of work with children in the early years.
Syllabus
This module will examine child welfare policy and practice in relation to younger children. Policy and practice in relation to family support prevention and child abuse will be critically explored. The care system for children separated from their parents will be outlined and analysed. The system established for the registration and inspection of early year's provision including childcare and education for children under 8 will be analysed.
