Module summary

Leadership - whether you want a theory based understanding, or have a real desire to contribute to, or to run, an organisation more efficiently now or in the future, this module is for you. It will give you an understanding of your own and others potential and skills. It should help you look at how you organise yourself and approach activities now. As part of any organisation (student house, social situations, voluntary activities, scout group, nightline, University Union committee, small and large enterprises...) understanding these issues can be really helpful.Leadership is vital for success in any professional area; the ability to engage co-workers or employees and communicate your ideas effectively to ensure cooperation is something everyone will need. The skills covered in this module offer you the chance to learn how to influence, persuade and lead groups of people, as well as understanding how groups work together and what makes people do what they do.This module will be delivered through a series of interactive workshops and guest lectures. The workshops will be delivered by Leeds Enterprise Centre staff, offering insights into the theory of group interaction and leadership alongside practical exercises, giving you the chance to reflect on your own experience as well as your learning.

Objectives

OThis module aims to provide an introduction to the fundamentals of leadership, particularly how this relates to small and developing businesses. Students will consider their own leadership potential as well as engaging with seminal and contemporary writings on leadership and their application.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Describe and explain of the concept of leadership and the literature on leadership
- Demonstrate knowledge of the dimensions of leadership and analyse how these might relate to their own personal style
- Explain the basic theories and concepts underlying how leaders operate ethically and create an ethical culture in the way they manage and operate within organisations
- Identify how relevant leadership theories can be applied in practice in different settings and situations

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Exercise effective basic leadership and change management skills
- Manage time effectively in an independent learning context

Subject specific
- Select and apply in a known context the skills and attributes necessary in intrapreneurship
- Deploy basic networking and negotiation skills in a supportive workshop environment


Syllabus

Indicative content
Introduction; Introduction to module, coursework details, group assignment. Introduction to the literature on Leadership in Business, the introduction will also begin the thinking of leadership and form your personal leadership model.
Leadership Traits and Skills: “Are leaders born or bred?” This session will cover seminal leadership studies and ongoing arguments and debates in research on leadership skills and traits.
Leadership Styles: This session will explore leadership styles and consider their relevance to different organisational settings and tasks.
Leadership and Values and Ethics: This session will cover creating an ethical culture, raise issues of 'darkside' characteristics, the role of ‘followers’ and charismatic leadership.
Leadership and Teams: This session will introduce concepts of leading groups, working within groups, and linking to concepts of teams action learning and networks.
Leadership and Culture This session will aim to create an understanding of diversity of approaches, the implication of culture on leadership styles and approaches, culturally responsible practice and an ability to become more culturally aware.
Leadership in Practice 1: Based around a group task using simulation software to complete a team-based task.
Leadership in Practice 2: A guest speaker will visit the class to talk about the challenges involved in leading a business.
Module Summary Workshop; Revision, discussion and advice about the course and the assignments.

The sessions listed make up the workshop portion of the module, group work tasks and a de-brief from the simulation task make up the remainder of the module teaching.

Private study

Students must attend the lectures and class workshops.

Students will be expected to read widely about the various theories of leadership and understand how the various themes in the theoretical literature have developed and intertwined.

Students will be expected to prepare essays, presentations and team assignments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance will be expected at every session, and non-attendance without good reason followed up. Issues will be addressed during the interactive workshop sessions.
