Objectives

The aim of the module is to give students the opportunity to demonstrate the independent research skills necessary to define conduct and report a focussed piece of empirical research in actuarial science. This module will provide students with the opportunity to develop a deep knowledge of risks and uncertainties whilst allowing students to apply knowledge acquired throughout the programme.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to critically evaluate:
- key contemporary theories and relevant empirical research evidence in the field of actuarial finance
- the implications and relevance of the current knowledge boundaries in actuarial finance

Skills outcomes
Transferable:
- Apply critical thinking in independently locating, extracting, analysing and critically evaluating arguments, data and information from the academic literature
- Structure and communicate complex mathematical, quantitative and qualitative information, ideas, analysis, argument and commentary
- Demonstrate effective time management
- Communicate in writing to an advanced academic level

Subject Specific:
- Find, evaluate and acknowledge and reference appropriate research sources
- Define, abstract and simplify a research question in actuarial finance to identify and model the core of their research topic and define justifiable conclusions from complex data using appropriate methodology


Syllabus

The syllabus for this module reflects the stages of a research project and will vary according to the research project selected. The syllabus will typically include: defining the research project, literature review, project planning, identifying a conceptual framework, developing a hypothesis/research question, data collection/review, data analysis, research conclusions, recommendations for future research, and writing up the research project.

The private study time will be used to develop and write a succinct research project. Supervisory contact will be used to get feedback and input on progress with the project this will also
