All students participating in this module must already have obtained the required qualifications to enter the LUBS PhD programme.

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge of the key debates and theoretical perspectives within their chosen discipline; improve student skills in the evaluation of academic papers; and develop an understanding of different approaches to writing effective literature reviews in the social sciences.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to critically assess:
- key theoretical and empirical debates within their chosen academic discipline
- the effectiveness of different research designs used to extend or generate new theoretical knowledge in their discipline
- ways to improve their ability to critically review academic papers
- the theory and practice of developing, structuring and writing academic literature reviews in the social sciences

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

Syllabus

Indicative content
A one day workshop which all students will be required to attend; and a series of eight two-hour seminars. In total there will be five separate seminar groups across the main substantive areas of the Business and Management pathway. In the opening workshop students will be introduced to different approaches towards conducting and writing a systematic literature review. In the seminars, students will apply the principles learnt to key debates in their particular field of interest.

Please note that this calculation of student study hours is based on students having to attend only one of the seven seminars available.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

During all the seminars (within each of the seven seminar series) students will receive verbal feedback on their contribution to the discussions and specifically on their own formal presentations to the whole group at one of the seminars. Outside of the seminars, students will be given the opportunity for feedback via telephone and/or email discussions with the tutor.
