Objectives
This module aims to introduce students to the main principles and developments in human resource management (HRM) in different types of employment situation. It evaluates the impact of HRM change, its implications for the management of employees, the economic labour market, social and cultural contexts of HRM, and the varied patterns of people management that currently exist.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Identify the main principles and developments in human resource management (HRM) in different types of employment situations
- Evaluate the impact of HRM change
- Assess the implications of HRM for the management of employees
- Recognise the diverse range of issues that emerge within HRM,
- Critically analyse the varied patterns of people management that currently exist
- Critically engage with current issues research and scholarship in the field of HRM
- Identify, describe and evaluate shifts and transformations in the global economy and place their knowledge of HRM theories, policies and practice within global and local contexts

Transnational corporations and their impacts on national and local labour markets
Skills and management practice and the changing role of the corporate HR Department

Private study
Students will spend 8 hours working in activity groups, established at the start of the academic year. These groups will act as a mechanism, beyond lectures and seminars, through which students can develop their learning. On two occasions these small groups will be facilitated by the personal tutor. These groups will be the groups used for the oral presentation, assessed in the middle of semester 1.Students will spend 6 hours preparing for each of the 20 seminars (120 hours total). The remaining time will be spent reading key and additional articles and preparing for the assessment for the module.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress will be assessed through: feedback on contributions in seminars and activity groups; feedback on a non-assessed practice essay set in semester 1, on the topic of ‘What is HRM’; written feedback on the presentation and reflective statement; written feedback on the coursework.Methods of assessment
