LUBS 5389M Research Design and Analysis

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

This aim of this module is to equip students with a thorough grounding in statistical analysis, together with an understanding of advanced research designs and techniques. It introduces advanced research approaches, design and analysis techniques appropriate for researching behaviour in organizations.

The module aims to use lectures, discussions, practical exercises and assessments to support students in enhancing their ability to select appropriate research designs, methods and analytical tools to test competing ideas, theories and interventions in a wide range of contexts.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically assess the efficacy of a wide range of research designs and approaches for investigating differing research problems
- Apply appropriate research designs and methods for testing theory and evaluating behavioural interventions in a range of applied contexts
- Apply accurately a range of advanced research techniques
- Critically assess and apply advanced statistical analysis

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
Transferable
- Report research results in a clear and consistent way
- Think critically and contrast competing ideas

Subject Specific
- Undertake a diverse range of academic and practitioner research
- Deploy appropriate skills to gather quantitative and qualitative data
- Plan and design research studies to test competing theory and assumptions
- Analyse advanced quantitative data sets

Private study

Due to the nature of topics and analytical techniques covered, each will require further independent study to consolidate in-class learning. This will involve reading research methods and statistics texts to put content into context, reading journal articles to understand how academic researchers put into practice the principles of sound research design, and rehearsal with practical exercises to develop expertise with specific statistical techniques.

Estimated study hours are as follows:
- Pre-lecture/workshop reading: 14 hours
- Post-lecture/workshop reading: 43 hours
- Independent statistical/analytical practice: 25 hours
- Assessment: 35 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Students will receive formative feedback throughout the module, including immediate feedback on analytical performance during the practical sessions.
- Summative assessment will take the form of an assessed piece of written coursework late in semester 2.
