Objectives

- Analyse the theory and practice of strategic HRM, and the role of the HR manager within strategic decision making

- Evaluate the potential for HR to impact upon performance, and the realities of the HR-performance relationship

- Recognise the potential and limitations of big data in strategic HRM

- Evaluate the role of talent management as an integrated approach towards managing the employment cycle

- Analyse talent management in a comparative context and in multi-national firms;

- Synthesise concepts from strategic HRM and talent management policy and theory to their own experiences of work in organisations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Apply knowledge for effective problem solving and decision making

- Deploy cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis to evaluating the main theoretical models of HRM

Syllabus

Part 1: Strategic HRM
- Introduction to Strategic HRM: past, present and future
- People and performance, big data and high performance work systems

Part 2: Global talent management and strategic HRM

- Recruitment and selection,
- Skills and training,
- Performance management
- Reward management
- Managing diversity
- Redundancy and restructuring
- Voice

Part 3: Critical cases in Strategic HRM

Masterclasses and contemporary thinking in HR. These sessions will involve the use of online resources, including webinars, existing HR speeches, lectures and workshops, and action learning set activities to complement the three day face-to-face workshops. The content of these sessions will vary from year to year, and will develop topics from part 1 and part 2 of the programme. Specific ideas for coverage include: austerity, restructuring and HRM; the changing role of the HR manager and Strategic HRM; strategic HRM in the public sector.

Independent online learning will involve locating and reading relevant journals and practitioner based HR literature, as directed by the module team

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress on the module will be monitored by feedback on group work in classes, through tutor/action learning group discussions, and through the opportunity to submit and discuss a plan for the assessed coursework.
